At one point in my career, I was facilitating all of my own quarterly and annual planning sessions. The results were less than desirable for the following reasons:
- I was too close to everything
- I loved all of my own ideas
- I didn’t create a safe environment where leaders could truly disagree with me
- I wasn’t a professionally trained facilitator
- Preparing for the sessions took time away from other important duties
- I couldn’t participate in the meetings appropriately (Sometimes the leader should go first, sometimes last)
So…I know firsthand that working with an advisor can be tremendous for any organization by putting into place the discipline that many companies lack and getting leaders focused on the quarterly and annual priorities that really make a difference.
